Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary variety of settings into one small island. Within a few hours you can move from golden beaches to misty hill country and centuries-old colonial architecture. Choosing the right backdrop is one of the first — and most exciting — decisions you will make.

Oceanfront resorts on the south and west coasts. Areas around Bentota, Galle and the southern coastline are favourites for sunset ceremonies with the sound of the waves behind you. Plan these for the drier months, typically December to April on this side of the island, and always have a covered backup space ready.

Colonial and heritage settings. The ramparts and streets of Galle Fort, restored villas and historic estates offer timeless architecture, courtyards and verandas that need very little decoration to look spectacular. They are ideal for elegant, intimate celebrations.

Hill country and tea estates. Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and the surrounding tea country offer cooler temperatures, rolling green views and a romantic, old-world feel. Allow extra travel time for guests and consider the cooler evenings when planning attire and outdoor seating.

Grand ballrooms in Colombo. For large guest lists, city hotels provide the capacity, catering and convenience that big celebrations demand. A ballroom is also a blank canvas — the perfect place for dramatic stage designs, floral ceilings and statement lighting.

Gardens and private estates. Lawns and private properties give you complete creative freedom, from the layout to the timeline. They do require more planning — power, restrooms, tenting and weather contingencies — which is where an experienced planner makes all the difference.

Questions to ask every venue. What is the maximum capacity for your ceremony format? What are the décor, sound and timing restrictions? Is there an indoor alternative for bad weather? Which vendors are allowed on site? And how early can the décor team begin setting up?
